Judy's short wave radio interest

Created by Colin 3 years ago
In the 1960s Judy built a crystal set for Long and Short wave.  The long wire aerial and listening at night brought in Stations from all over the world.   Next with a war surplus set and later two commercial receivers she operated British Receiving Station 26120 (Designated by the RSGB). Cards were exchanged with many Hams and commercial stations.  Sunday mornings on Top Band brought in the Trawler Skippers calling home from out  in the North Sea - which Judy was to experience in all its moods from flat calm to Force 10.  On several occasions the Captain allowed her to watch the radar and sounding apparatus - which revealed the surprising shallowness of the North Sea at about 140 feet.   She used a satellite phone to call me from near the Lofoten Islands.
